Important issues
to consider:
Global Paradigm
Shift
-
Corporations are becoming information-based, electronically connected and globally interdependent.
-
The focus on globalization is driving organizations to use communication technologies to resolve issues of distance, time and culture.
-
Technology is seen as a “solution” to cultural and geographic differences as workforce fragmentation increases.
-
Virtual team members are increasingly multicultural, geographically dispersed and cross-functional.
Global Team Challenges
-
The greater the space, distance, time, complexity of task or diversity of team members the greater the chance for failure.
-
Technology challenges a team member’s ability to retain their own cultural processes and identity.
-
Technology intensifies cultural variables of time, communication, relationship and power distance.
Linking Inputs and Outputs
-
How does culture impact communication?
-
How is conflict managed or feedback given?
-
How is power and authority distributed?
-
How are decisions made and by whom?
-
Are all communication technologies available?
-
Is there a resistance to certain technology/media in other cultures?
-
Are team members trained in and comfortable with communication media?
-
Is the technology culturally biased?
-
Does the simplest technology work best?
-
Do you have an established network?
-
Is the chosen technology practical or reliable?
-
Do you have training and support globally?
-
Is your communication channels secure?
-
Will e-mail be the backbone of the global
team?
